Abstract
Recently, soil-dwelling nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) has been used to assess the toxicity of hazardous chemicals including endocrine disruoptors. In this study, changes in gene expression in C. elegans in response to synthetic estrogen 17¥á-ethinylestradiol (EE2) were investigated with a microarray consisting of the nematode-specific probes. Upon exposure to EE2 for 24 hrs, we found 32 different genes that were up- or down-regulated with statistically significant changes. Thiol protease, cysteine protease and transporter protein were up-regulated, however, serine/threonine protein phosphatase, trypsin inhibitor and glutathione-s-transferase were down-regulated. Compared to classical tests this C. elegans chip microarray will be useful in generating gene expression profiles at the same time and be used for well regulated biomarker genes to study of toxicogenomics more in detail.
